Pantaleone’s Scazzetta
In Portanova square we say goodbye to the last glimpse of sea and we go into via dei Mercanti, between old shops and small coloured streets, to discover the famous confectionery laboratory where, almost a hundred years ago, was born this delicious cake whose name and colour are odd.
Antica Dolceria Pantaleone, a traditional confectionery since 1868
At the building number 75, after the main entrance of the ancient Purgatory Souls Chapel, the Pantaleone’s confectionery takes out of the oven different types of cakes since 1868, and it has become an institution for the town and not only, because it has also seduced the palates of very famous people such as the previous US President, Bill Clinton, Michail Gorbaciov and the Pope Woytila.
In this confectionery laboratory, furnished in the Liberty style, that is an essential part of the history of Salerno, time seems to have stopped and the garish red of Scazzette in the windows make the background even more enchanting.
The name and the colour of the icing remind the traditional cardinals’ headgear: the red skullcap, actually.
Born in 1920 by the inspiration of the pastry-cook Mario Pantaleone, initially as a single dose, the cardinal’s scazzetta gained later the title of cake, and today we are going to order a slice of it.
It is not only beautiful to see but it is also delicious. The red strawberry icing covers two sponge cake disks filled with tasty Chantilly custard enriched with wild strawberries: a mix of ingredients that will never disappoint.
Even if we still have a strong desire to eat more and more of this cake, we go home, thinking of the next pleasure to tell you.
