Bracigliano cherry: the red gold of our territory

Tastes
After we have talked about the red King of the table, the Diario Salernitano goes back to the Agro Sarnese-Nocerino area to meet the red Queen of the table: the Bracigliano cherry, that was given many awards as “the best cherry of the year”.

Bracigliano cherry

We are now in the right period to admire the deep red panorama, in fact the white of the flowers has now been replaced from the different shades of red of these rich species of cherries, the Bracigliano “Spernocchie”, that ripen later, from half June to the first week of July, welcoming summer and turning red the Agro hills.

One-third of the Campania cherries production comes from the area of Bracigliano town that since the 16th century boasts of the cultivation of “Spernocchie”, cherries that have medium-big size, dark colour and very juicy and rich flesh.

Bracigliano, a terra de’ cerase

In November 2012 they received the DOP trademark and every year we celebrate and we can remember the ancient flavour with an event called “Bracigliano – A terra de’ cerase” during which it is possible to taste cherries in all their different combinations.

We hurry up to stock up with cherry jam, perfect to colour our summer breakfasts, cherries preserved in alcohol, to decorate our cakes during our winter’s Sundays, and we take some fresh cherries to lighten up the return journey to Salerno.
